BEX IV Levy Projects: Laurelhurst Gym Remodel

The gym at Laurelhurst Elementary underwent a remodel this summer as part of the Seismic Improvement Projects of the 2013 BEX IV Levy, which identified schools that were in need of earthquake safety improvements.

The original 1947 structure was composed of brick masonry walls with glass block and needed a 21st century update. This remodel to improve earthquake safety included laying new foundations and adding steel cross bracing to each of the four walls, as well as new roof connections to capture earthquake forces.

Along with adding earthquake safety improvements, sound absorbing ceiling panels were installed and the entire floor of the gym was refinished in a lighter color. The original parquet floor can still be seen through the new gloss finish. Students were able to begin classes in the newly remodeled gym on October 20, 2019.

Thank you to the Seattle voters for approving the 2013 BEX IV Levy to improve earthquake safety district-wide!
